Tourism has long been at the heart of Whistler's economy, yet Whistler's story reaches much further back. For countless generations before becoming a world-renowned destination, these lands were cared for by the Líl̓wat7úl (Lil’wat Nation, Interior Salish) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation, Coast Salish) peoples, whose traditions reflect a deep respect for the relationship between people and the natural world. Whistler is committed to honouring that connection by measuring success not only by visitor numbers, but by the well-being of its residents, workforce and community as a whole.

Whistler's residents and businesses share a passionate committment to protecting the mountain environment and advancing the community's goal of becoming a truly sustainable resort. We encourage all event producers to integrate sustainability into their planning and operations.

Whistler's approach to sustainability is also supported by the Smart Tourism Committee, a Select Committee of Council. This group provides strategic advice to the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) to help shape a shared vision for the future of tourism, one that builds economic resilience, promotes regenerative practices and ensures tourism enhances both the community and the environment.

Smart Tourism is defined as a unified, collaborative approach to destination management ensuring Whistler's community, environment and culture continue to be enriched and supported by tourism.
